Where can I find red vintage Bakelite heart rings?
When I was a kid my aunt had a lovely red heart ring which I later found out was made of red Bakelite.
Ever since then I have been looking for one. I did a web search and found two, both of them had been sold.
I haunt yard sales and thrift stores looking for my red heart ring. My aunt lost her ring and has no idea where. She thought that she left it in a public restroom. I have been looking for a ring like hers for years and haven’t had any luck. I did locate two but both had been sold.
Are you wondering what in the world is Bakelite. It is a thermo plastic used as electric insulators. It was used to make phones, plastic ware and jewelry. The only way you can get this early plastic is to check out auctions on line, thrifts stores, yard and estate sales.
If you come upon something you think or are told is Bakelite, there is a quick and simple way to test for Bakelite. Rub your fingers over the piece. Grasp it in your hand and rub it with your thumb until it is warm, then smell the piece for formaldehyde or carbolic acid. You won’t get the same odor strength with every piece but you will most certainly smell something.
Bakelite products were very popular when they first came out and were used for jewelry and electricity delivery systems. It became popular for used in jewelry such as bracelets, rings and earrings, napkin holders and other household objects.
The 1940’s brought a blast of new colors, art deco style jewelry look great in Bakelite. The rare coveted vintage red heart ring made with Bakelite is hard to find.
I found a red rose Bakelite ring. The flower was huge, big and gaudy, as Bakelite was meant to have vibrant colors. I haven’t given up, eventually I plan to own a red heart ring.
